Mr. Haddad’s Syllabus and Handbook for 2015-2016
Welcome,
The course you have selected for this year is Choir or Orchestra. There are several different classes for choir and for orchestra. The purpose of these classes is to start or to continue to develop your skills in singing or in playing your instrument.
In order to better communicate with you and your parents during the school year, please fill out the Information Sheet completely. This sheet was sent home with your student n the Handbook I gave them. The three sheets are due by September 3rd or 4th.

CLASSROOM OBJECTIVES
1. The student will sing or play on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. The student will improvise melodies, and variations.
3. The student will compose music within specific guidelines.
4. The student will read and notate music.
5. The student will listen to, analyze, and describe music.
6. The student will evaluate music and music performances.
7. The student will understand the relationships between music, the other arts, and content areas outside the arts.
8. The student will understand music in relation to history and culture.
These 8 standards will be taught as an on-going basis throughout the year through different materials such as:
Theory Notebook (Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory, Book 1)
Music of different difficulty levels
Music from different cultures, languages and eras
Music with and without accompaniments

You will be challenged musically. DON'T GIVE UP!!!!

You don't always have to agree with the director or your classmate,
but you must display an attitude of respect toward them.
Respect our facilities and equipment. IF IT'S NOT YOURS, DON'T TOUCH!
BE PUNCTUAL
Be aware of all rehearsals, performances, tests and due dates.
BE PREPARED
Bring all of your required materials to class daily. Do your homework.
BE INSPIRED
Take pride in yourself and in the choir and or orchestra. Love what you do!
· Be on time to class.
· Come into class quietly, ready to learn.
Participation is a must every day.
Show respect to everyone, even if you don’t get it in return.
If “IT” isn’t yours, then leave “IT” alone.
CLASSROOM SUPPLY LIST
All students will need the following for Choir and or Orchestra at both schools.
1. 1 folder for their music. Mr. Haddad has a limited supply for free.
2. At least 2, #2 pencils. ( Choir and Orchestra)
3. 1 journal notebook. ( Choir and Orchestra)
4. Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory, (for their appropriate clef, Orchestra)
· Choir will need the Alfred Essentials of Music Theory for Treble Clef.
This book is due asap as we will begin with Music Theory. Any questions, talk with Mr. Haddad.
All Orchestra students will need the following unless they already have it.
· A shoulder rest, fitted for their instrument. (violins and violas only)
· 1 cake of rosin for their instrument.
· 1 extra set of strings (violins and violas maybe cellos) in case they break one.
· A cloth to wipe down their instrument AFTER they have played or practiced.
ALL SHEET MUSIC WILL BE SUPPLIED BY THE DIRECTOR.
GRADING POLICY
I will follow the CMS grading scale for all grading during the year.
There will be at least two concerts this school year and a chance for a third. The Winter Concert for James Martin Middle School will be December 16th, 2014 at 7:00 pm in the gym. The Winter Concert for Z. B. Vance High School will be December 17th, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium. The Spring Concert date will be forth coming in this location of my website.
It is expected that every student is at each performance during their semester in class as it is part of their grade. This is a participation class! If difficulties arise, contact the director, Mr. Haddad, as soon as possible. NOT THE DAY OF THE CONCERT!!
There will be at least two tests per month along with daily homework which will all figure into the student’s final grade for each quarter and semester.
Since this is a participation class, it is imperative that each Orchestra student have his or her instrument in class daily in full working order. All Choir students must participate in class warm-ups and in singing of our music daily!
The student will also receive a participation grade for each quarter which will be averaged into their final grade.
HOMEWORK POLICY
Your homework must be turned in the day that it is due!
Your homework will be turned into the appropriate bin in the classroom.
The Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory and the Practice reports (for Orchestra) are part of your homework!
CONCERT/CONCERT ATTIRE
The Winter Concert date has been set. The Winter Concert for James Martin Middle School will be December 16th, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the gym. The Winter Concert for Vance High School will be December 17th, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium. Your child will need to be in Mr. Haddads' room by 6:15 pm for tuning/warm-ups and getting into the concert site to begin promptly by 7:00 pm for the concert at James Martin and 6:00 pm for the 7:00 pm concert at Vance. All Choir and Orchestra students will need to stay until the end of the concert in order to be able to evaluate the performances during their next class day.
The Concert Attire for James Martin Middle School is seen below for both girls and boys, in order to keep things professional and appropriate for performing in school and out in the city.

The polo shirts are being ordered and will be embroidered with the James Martin logo and the word "Choir". These polo shirts cost $16.00 each, and the $16.00 is due to Mr. Haddad no later than October 1st. If there is a problem, please contact Mr. Haddad by Monday, September 14th, 2015.
The Concert Dress for Vance High School will be discussed with the officers. Mr. Haddad reserves the right for the final decision.
FIELD TRIPS
Regarding field trips, we may be taking groups to Carowinds Amusement Park for the “Music Festival in the Park”. Those groups will be determined by the director as to how well he feels the different groups are progressing. We will need chaperones for those groups!
FUNDRAISERS

Students can talk to me to set up a time for extra help outside of the class for better understanding of the material.
Parents can contact me, at 704-619-1096 anytime to talk, or set up an appointment, if I am in class.
